The Cankids Pediatric Palliative Care Project (PPCP) is an integral part of our objective to improve the quality of life for cancer children and their families in India. The aims of the project are:
- To develop and provide the full spectrum of pediatric palliative care and support to cancer-affected children in the areas of social, psychosocial, emotional support. Our services aim to cover the Delhi region, as well as other regions across India.
- To collaborate with Pediatric Cancer Units (PCUs) as well as pain and palliative care professionals and other NGOs to provide better palliative care within the centers and to develop a network of support in different regions across India.
- To ensure opioid availability for children and thus enhance the management of pain within pediatric cancer units (PCUs)
- To build and enhance our own capacity to provide the most compassionate care in both a hospice and/ or home setting. This can be achieved through informative workshops, sharing and caring sessions as well as through the database of compiled resources
- To recruit a Palliative Care team and establish a Pediatric Palliative Care center to improve the quality of patient support at the hospitals.
We completed Phase I of the Pediatric Palliative Care Project between May and Dec 09 utilizing internal resources and with local funding support and resources. It is now our hope to gain funding for the interim phase of the project which will take place over a six month period and eventually build towards the Phase II of the project.
