September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and Punjab is going Gold. The gold ribbon honors children with cancer and families and pledges support for childhood cancer to be a child health priority.
Statistics and Collaboration
It is estimated Punjab accounts for 989 to 1435 cases of childhood cancer each (0-19 years) as per ICCC-3 World Average Incidence Rate (0-19 years) of similar data is 97 and 96 respectively.
CanKids has signed an MoU with the Government of Punjab to assist the state in matters relating to Medical Education and Research. Government of Punjab, Department of Medical Education and Research.
This MoU will help in the development and implementation of a state-level childhood cancer control policy in Punjab which will be integrated into the
- Development of appropriate infrastructure of Pediatric Oncology, Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS), to ensure
- Access2Care networks and referral pathways to oncology centers of excellence
- Capacity building of pediatric oncology treatment diagnostics, quality and affordable drugs
- Patient specific interventions society engagement through participatory approach.
This MoU does not reflect any financial burden on the state government.

CanKids will
- Mobilise the referral pathways so that patients are referred to the state under special centres where treatment for Childhood Cancer is available in the primary health centre
- With stake holders like PHC, build capacity for doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff in aspects of care and support for
- Create and provide IEC material and conduct awareness programs on childhood cancer across Punjab.
- Provide information and material updates on MoU and with childhood cancer to Punjab Government Health lines.
- Epidemiology, studies, research with MoU and with Government Department of Medical Education and Research.
